Capcom: Breath of Fire Revival Is A ‘Low Possibility’

The Breath of Fire series is one of the longest standing RPG franchises today. The first installment debuted circa 1993 on SNES and is often considered a classic by many gamers, including myself. The second installment, while sporting a terrible translation, greatly improved upon the first in other aspects and held its own against Square Enix’s mighty Final Fantasy franchise. The third installment was exceptionally well received as well, making its way into Sony’s greatest hits line of PSOne titles. Since then though, the franchise has been in somewhat of a decline - primarily sales-wise.
It’s been a few years since the release of Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter on PS2, is Capcom planning to bring the BoF franchise to its former glory? According to corporate officer Keiji Inafune, the answer is no. Capcom does not see the BoF name as profitable anymore - at least outside of Japan.
There are currently no plans on making a new Breath of Fire game. Apart from that, regarding RPG titles, they are very popular in Japan, but only certain RPG titles sell so Capcom doesn’t really need to even consider making these titles as an option.
Not all hope is lost, though. Inafune reassured that there is a “low possibility” that we will see Breath of Fire on a current-generation console in the future, as there are quite a few Capcom developers interested in continuing the series.
