sony3psp4000 Rumor: PSP 4000 An Aesthetic Revamp, Has Sliding Screen
Citing a well-placed source, VG247 is reporting that the PSP-4000 is indeed in development, echoing previous comments made by Eurogamer late last year.

This time, said sources offered a bit more in the way of details on the supposed fourth PSP hardware revision, revealing that it will be completely revamped aesthetically. One of the changes is a front-sliding screen. Inside, though, it’ll still be based on the same tech - meaning this is not PSP2.

An announcement regarding the PSP-4000 is expected to be made in the coming months, during either GDC or E3. The photo above is only an artistic representation of what the new PSP might look like, not the real thing, obviously.

If you click the source link it's made quite clear that the image presented is very similar to what the PSP-4000 may indeed look like.

In regards to the PSP-4000 in general. What in the flying fuck was Sony thinking when releasing such a miniscule and insignificant hardware update to the PSP known as the PSP-3000. Honest to god, are they mental? Every PSP user is going to have a different model each progressively lacking features. Stupid move Sony, stupid move.

If this 4000 has a second analog stick and gigabytes of internal memory, I'll buy it. Otherwise, Sony can take this hardware iteration and shove it up their ass. I'm not interested in unthoughtful rehashes.

  9. Cryox

That PSP-4000 pic looks tight. Even though that is not the real thing, if it looks kinda like it, that is a definite buy for me. Looks perfect for watching movies

Why are they still keeping the same 5 year old hardware? I want better quality games. I don't care as much for a sliding screen.

If you want better quality games, you're better off nagging the game developing companies (Although I guess Sony falls into that category as well...). The PSP is alright in all seriousness, it's just the games for the most part aren't. There's very little uniqueness and very little innovation involved in any PSP game.

There's really not a single game in the foreseeable future (minus Resistance: Retribution, and FF: Dissidia) that's really worth getting for the PSP. I just checked out the PSP game line up on ebgames.com and the game list is pathetic. Sony needs to seriously push this product and provide some sort of incentive for quality games to be produced. The PSP can't carry its weight on its own.

In all truthfulness though, you're right. Why the fuck is Sony shelling out useless design rehash after useless design rehash, when what it really needs is some quality software to reinforce its device.

  13. Noriyuke

haha, dam yo, i kinda wish the psp was a lot more like that slider, i mean the controls would be a tad annoying like that, but overall it would be a better platform.

  14. Adiuvo

The hardware is five years old now. It's time for better hardware, and a different medium for games. That will get developers making games for it again, not another design rehash.

  15. Nero

Just make the damn psp2 already, we don't need more hardware revisions.

  16. -chw42-

The only way this PSP can succeed if it gets the attention of the casual gaming community, meaning going towards something the iPhone's done - independent developers. This will cause piracy to go down due to lower game prices and if it is profitable, bigger developers will eventually come and play. This is exactly what's happened to the iPhone.

It also seems that the new PSP will have a touch screen (since it's a sliding screen, why else would they have one?). Besides, which new device doesn't come with a touch screen nowadays? If it functions well and has improved internet functionality along with a better music and movie player, then it might get some PMP people to switch over. Sony needs to take the route Apple has taken. However, they can't lose the serious gamers. It's going to be tough to say the least...but they put themselves into this rut.

  17. _Syn

The photoshopped version of the Original Gameboy (or GB Color) had me for a bit . The photoshopped version of the "iPSP" looks pretty dope to me, that'll be great. But, too bad it's all just .. fake.

I love your rant to yourself madsoul :P

  18. z357x

Prinny is an amazing PSP shit bricks. Play it NAO!

  19. Adiuvo

You've played it too? I agree, amazing game. Hard as heck though, you'll literally want to throw your PSP around after a few hours with it. I have to force myself to take breaks from it before it reaches that level. It's games like Prinny that stop me from selling my PSP and getting an iTouch, along with the homebrew games and emulators.

I had a friend, who that when I went to his house, he always had new controllers every weekend, due to him literally throwing them on the ground when being so mad. It was sort of funny.

  21. androidkaita

That'd be sick, I still have the original PSP haha

  22. Sullivan

I sold mine, not to long ago.

Im skeptical about buying a new PSP, seeing as sony has released 2 different series almost in the same year.

  23. Mister Chief

This would be a PSP 2 not a PSP 4000.

Hardly if the inner hardware is all the same and the original UMD format is still intact. It would just be the same old PSP cept in a newer updated case. Not quite worthy of nabbing the "PSP 2" title.

What I'm saying is that Sony would never do such a huge hardware change just for a hardware iteration. If they were going to do this it would be the design on the PSP 2.

  26. -chw42-

I think Sony was too busy making a Hannah Montana PSP, that's why there's no PSP 2 yet.

It's just a paint job. I personally find it a great decision to try and appeal to even the female gamer.

  28. Moose

New colours will always gather attention... especially a colour geared towards female gamers. Sony needs all the customers they can get.

I'm gonna go with probably not.

The Pink PSP-1000 sold very nicely for them. Why wouldn't they create a new colour to aim at female gamers?

So long as it isn't actually branded with Hannah Montana on the back I'm sure that one will sell well too, if it is branded though it's going after a very niche audience and will be a certain failure.

I'm pretty sure the Hannah Montana fanbase would be more pleased with the DS than the PSP...

I just think the intended audience they're marketing at just isn't, well, fitting for them.

If the Hannah Montana fanbase would be better off with the DS then there's all the more reason for Sony to target that market. The fact that it's also a girl friendly colour is just a bonus then.

Edit: it's a risky move but I've given up any premonitions that Sony are still sane. They seem content to keep digging their grave so lets leave them too it.

  32. Seth

I feel it will sell,I been talking to a few girls who have geek boyfriends and they would like a psp over a ds atm. There just looking for a few girl games before they pick it up,tho they whouldent mind god of war they much rather have Paton/fun games. I texted a few today telling up that lbp is coming to the psp they seemed kinda happy about it.

Nah, i was merely explaining the second point at Vanden level.
The edit doesnt suck, its a fantastic shop just not something i see Sony doing lol.

  34. Seth

I can never see that in the hand of a 12 year old, I whouldent mind using it tho in fact I would love it.

Kinda reminds me of this http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1945/final5se4ew.jpg

  35. Slasher

I could easily see it in the hands of a 12 year old. My brother is 12 and would definitely love something like that.

10 and younger though? Maybe not

  36. Seth

I remember a time when the psp first came out thinking that there no way this can end up in the hands of kids. Tho and behold 3 years later and I see 7 years olds with Iphones,PSP,and a bluthooth.

    Edit a bluetooth lol..

  37. Moose

    'A Bluetooth'?

I don't think age is really of concern to Sony... they already have a large portion of the consumer market backing the PSP franchise so any future releases will be well received no matter what.

    Ouch.

Slasher, that would be an awesome system (physically) if they got it right.
Sony never really had problems in their design unit.

Just hardware they need to revamp, and with the UMD drive supposedly gone then I think they've started taking steps in the right direction.

    No kidding, eh?
I cannot even fathom why they didn't bother with 2 in the very beginning. That alone would probably give most games THAT much extra leverage and make them THAT much more enjoyable. Especially FPS's.
