Update: Firmware is out. Check Network Update or grab it by clicking here.
Sony just announced that firmware 5.50 for PSP is due out tomorrow — April 21. The update will allow users to browse the built-in PSP store without a registered PSN account. Of course, you’ll still need to register an account to purchase anything.
PSN integration will also be enhanced with the arrival of version 5.50, as a live news-ticker detailing the latest offers from the store will be visible from the XMB. Additionally, another key, and perhaps overdue improvement is the ability to create subfolders for media such as photos, music, and videos.
Specific to North American PSP owners is the inclusion of Trend Micro security software. You’ll be able to access a free trial of the software by installing this firmware update. When enabled, it provides parental controls and technology that automatically scans for inappropriate content.
More details are after the jump.
London – April 20, 2009: The doors to PlayStation®Store have just opened wide thanks to the latest system software update for PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable). The v5.50 upgrade means you no longer need a PlayStation®Network account to do a quick bit of window shopping – you can check out all the latest games, trailers and demos available for download from your PSP.
But that’s not all the upgrade offers. PSP users will now be able to view PlayStation Network’s Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface– the live news feed detailing the latest exciting PlayStation Store offers – on their screen (as long as they are WiFi connected).

5.50 sounds nice, some decent features
April 20th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Catergories is a massive leap, o yeah been a plugin for quite a while now, well at least there following the lead ;) - Joking aside, the PSN stuff sounds pretty cool. XMB display and stuff. Hopefully it will live up to it's promise.

i think people are forgetting tiff eploit patch...
aint it a surprise anouncement?
Did they beat us in this one?
Answers tomorrow
LOL

Hm....securty upgrade.tiff-eggsploit patch. lol
April 20th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
And what's this about Trend Micro Security? That doesn't even make sense.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Besides that the new firmware have some pretty good new features, hope that it won't patch the tiff exploit. If not then I am so gonna try it :D
April 20th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Hitting tomorrow. Coincidence? Definitely not. Let's see how badly they botched the TIFF fix.
Good news: they didn't patch the k-mode exploit, most likely. If I were Davee, I'd see if I could get another usermode exploit in a reasonable amount of time before releasing the k-mode exploit.
E] For those of you who want to be obsessive, you can check if the update is out or not by looking here:
http://fu01.psp.update.playstation.org/update/us/psp-updatelist.txt
If it says 2009_0120 in that string, it's not out. If it says 2009_0420 or 2009_0421, it's out.

It's nice to see that they introduced some new features this time instead of just a security fix.
April 20th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Obviously this update was ready before the whole tiff exploit thing. But I guess they found the time to add a fix :p
However, as Archaemic said, it is unlikely that Davee's kernel exploit has been patched, as very few people know about it yet.
So finding a User-mode exploit on this new firmware will actually be useful :D

could someone(those with downgradable psp) check if MaTiAz Tiff eggsploit is still working on this FW?
i will love these two new features:
# The v5.50 upgrade means you no longer need a PlayStation®Network account to do a quick bit of window shopping – you can check out all the latest games, trailers and demos available for download from your PSP. (From SCEE press release)
# Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
Now i can organize better my tons of mangas, mp3 and videos. or is there a homebrew that can do this?

E] Supposedly, this removes TIFF support entirely. I kinda expected that anyway.

Oh wow...
Well I guess that's one way to deal with the exploit issue :P
April 21st, 2009 at 8:28 am
Scratch that, unreliable sources. I CAN CONFIRM THAT 5.50 HAS TIFF SUPPORT STILL. I just updated. Pandora's Battery is a great thing ;)
E] Hehe, my (unfortunately not exploitable, AFAICT) TIFF crasher still works on 5.50 too :D 'tis a beautiful thing to see a brand new firmware die at my hands.
April 21st, 2009 at 8:32 am
I'm still surprised they don't remove Tiff support. It's a cool format, but I think people rather have jpegs and pngs in their photo folders...
Or maybe they have some kind of "contractual obligation" since tiff support is written somewhere on the box/manual when you buy a psp ?
April 21st, 2009 at 8:47 am
Wow, it looks like they basically removed support for any TIFF with extra samples (e.g. transparency, or other image data that isn't directly displayed) instead of fixing it so it was properly supported. Shame. Now I have no idea where to attack ;)
April 21st, 2009 at 8:57 am
Ah, crap, that was my main field of investigation too recently
I hope the "subdirectories allowed" thing for mp3 can give us some "long path buffer overflow" opportunity maybe ;)
April 21st, 2009 at 9:08 am
Yeah, I doubt it. Sony would have to be really bad at this to implement paths entirely wrong. For all we know, it's not recursive, and I highly doubt that there isn't a cap at around 16, if not lower than that.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:20 am
I hope we'll have PSPLink working on the 3000 though, there are PSP3000/2000 specific crashes I want to investigate too

Hey guys, mortalinstincts at eXophase Forums said something you all shoud know about the TIFF situation on Version 5.50:
I was on the Dark Alex IRC yesterday and they said that they have disabled TIFFs with alpha layers... (no idea what that is.. lol)
but they havent entirely removed TIFF support...
April 22nd, 2009 at 8:09 pm
To be honest, I wasn't aware TIFF even had alpha support :P
For those not in the know - Alpha Layers are just transparency.

Tiff is a very powerful format. A Tiff file can contain several pictures. It can even embed jpegs, etc...
It is very flexible, therefore an easy target for hacking.
It is a bit unfortunate that we keep hacking the PSP through tiff images, because I believe it gives a bad image to open source libraries, but oh well :(

In fact, computer viruses can be embedded into a TIFF too.
The virus won't work on the PSP though.

we have pandora now.. so whats a brick when we can easily reflash ;)
April 23rd, 2009 at 6:36 am
We didn't have pandora when this Trojan hit, though
April 23rd, 2009 at 6:44 am
It doesn't affect firmwares newer than 2.80 anyway. I don't think it affects newer than 2.71, actually. So it kind of doesn't matter at this point at all.

That's malware for the PSP, I was talking about having a Windows / PC virus. XD
