ChickHEN Released – Homebrew on “ALL” PSPs!
by Justin B on May.05, 2009 at 6:06 pm, under Gaming, PSP Homebrew, PlayStation Portable | Thread ID: 2975
[Update: HEN currently does not run any homebrew but can load up into the HEN environment. As a result we are left with BrokHEN (coined by GinoD!) with a new version coming out tomorrow to fix the issues.]
Just a few moments ago Team Typhoon released a homebrew enabler for the Playstation Portable. This HEN (labeled as “ChickHEN”) will allow PSP owners to execute homebrew code on their PSP so long as they are not on the latest PSP firmware (5.50). You will need firmware 5.03 to run HEN (lower firmwares will not work). So if you are on anything lower than 5.03 you will need to update to 5.03.
Davee, along with Bubbletune and other PSP developers have been working hard and long to get this development out to the community and the day has finally come. You can check out how to run HEN on your PSP after the break as well as what HEN is incapable of doing.
Download: [ChickHEN]
Source: [Davee]
How do i get the HEN to run on my PSP?
1. First off use the supplied TIFF image and place it in the PSP>PHOTO Directory.
2. Copy h.bin over to the MS ROOT and safely remove device.
2. Scroll over to the PHOTO icon on the XMB and click the ChickHEN folder and wait. (This will not work the first time, you may have to just use a method of loading that works for you but this is what we have found most efficient)
3. If all goes well the screen should blank out and flash green showing that the HEN is loaded and all is well.
4. Wait for your PSP to reboot and check your PSP's system software. It should now display: "5.03 ChickHEN".
5. Scroll on over to GAME and enjoy some Homebrew! What ChickHEN does NOT do?
-Run ISO, CSO or any other form of UMD backup.
-Run PSX Games
-Touch The Flash of your beloved PSP

Nice job. I hope the future patch fixes the current problems.

Great work Davee and team! Job well done...except for the part where it doesn't work right now :D Patiently awaiting the next revision
May 5th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
I saw something in Davee all along, still in debt to me in points :p
Good job guys, don't let the fame get to your head ;)
May 5th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Great work Davee. Like everyone else, looking forward to that update :)
May 5th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
i cant play homebrews on mmy psp but it says 5.03 chickhen
May 5th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
Sadly that is all that it does right now. It was not fully tested after a bug was fixed and therefore loads but doesn't load homebrew (so you can load into the HEN environment but not homebrew right now)
May 6th, 2009 at 12:00 am
whens the home brew enable coming?
May 6th, 2009 at 12:04 am
I don't care that it doesn't play homebrew's at the moment. It's great to see my own psp3k running the HEN :D great job Davee and team
May 6th, 2009 at 12:08 am
Great work Davee. I can't wait to try it out, can't yet apparently my battery is too low for an update to be installed, what idiot throught that up :(.
May 6th, 2009 at 12:13 am
Way to go Davee..awesome job..God Bless you :D

Dear Davee,
I have an old GBA... the first version without a backlight. I also bought pokemon firered a few years back. I would love to play it again but the screen on my GBA is really really gay. I cannot see anything unless there is a lot of ambient light in the room. I say ambient because if i use a directional light than i get a really big glare shining back at my face... good for tanning not so good for being a pokemon master =(
So... I bought a PSP in january hoping to play pokemon on it. It did not make sense to get a new GBA since I already have one and they sell for about $100 now. I also did not want a DS because the dual screen scares me. I think i might go cross eyed cause I would try to look at both screens at the same time. Anyways, little did i know the psp was a 3000 unit. So... I waited patiently for a HEN release for 5 months but it appears to still need a little work. I am super grateful for all the work you and your team have put in (during your exams)... but it would be awesome if I had pokemon running on my psp by tomorrow. Why tomorrow? Well its my birthday and its what i have been wishing for every day for the last 5 months.
k that is all
Thanks!

Thx
May 6th, 2009 at 12:21 am
Awesome work Davee and team!!! Thanks!!
May 6th, 2009 at 12:24 am
A smart person did. It helps prevent people from bricking or semi bricking while updating
May 6th, 2009 at 12:36 am
I was being sarcastic I know it helps stop people from bricking but it does also annoy the hell out of people who want to update.
May 6th, 2009 at 12:44 am
thank you Davee. I will be waiting for the real deal, i.e., HEN version that can play homebrew and emulators. You like making other people wait right? You deserve the attention and popularity though ;).
May 6th, 2009 at 12:46 am
does this work on psp 3000 from japan
May 6th, 2009 at 12:53 am
This version is lower than the demo version on the video?
May 6th, 2009 at 1:10 am
The article title is a bit misleading, as no homebrew can be run on the psp yet.
May 6th, 2009 at 1:24 am
That's because at the time it was written without major testing from anyone, although an update was made to reflect that
May 6th, 2009 at 1:36 am
Someone knows if testing different homebrews just to see if they work or by experimenting using chickhen gives any chances of breacking the psp? or is sure to experiment running homebrews?
PS: i know this hen rlease doesnt work now, just wondering
May 6th, 2009 at 1:55 am
Worked on a Japanese PSP of mine. Had to set the Character set to US Latin and Display language to English.

Ashame that it doesn't fully work yet, but still congrats on getting it this far.
quick question though, is one of the bugs needed to be fixed the bug where when you do a full shut down the HEN goes away? Or is that supposed to happen?
May 6th, 2009 at 2:31 am
It's supposed to happen. HEN has never been a permanent thing in all of it's forms.
May 6th, 2009 at 2:34 am
For people who can't even get the ChickHen on there, if you replace the Gif images with jpegs, and order it so that the TIFF image is number six out of 8, it will work a lot better with fewer crashes.
Hope that helps anyone with that issue.
May 6th, 2009 at 3:15 am
Thank you Davee!
May 6th, 2009 at 3:16 am
Like Davee said, tuesday!
:P
May 6th, 2009 at 3:20 am
Thanks Davee. HEN is awesome had I can't wait for the better version of HEN tomorrow.
May 6th, 2009 at 3:45 am
Great job guys. I love that there is now a little more life in the psp world thanks to you.

Oh,bad news for many.
I'm wondering how can Davee's PSP3000 run Homebrew while others' can not.

I'm wondering how can Davee's PSP3000 run Homebrew while others' can not.
The most likely answer to that question is because while Davee was trying to fix the kernel mode bug (or possibly another bug) he accidentally created the bug which makes homebrew fail to load. The only reason Davee could run homebrew is because the revision of HEN shown in the videos would be different than the final release and would not have that bug.
May 6th, 2009 at 4:57 am
SO it's just a mistake Davee made??(release a wrong version?)
May 6th, 2009 at 5:20 am
Not exactly that would have been the newest version but it wasn't properly tested before he released it. He spent so much time making sure he got out all the little bugs and added in one big bug which is kinda funny.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:41 am
Help!! It is pretty hard to get in chick Hen mode. Is there any standard procedure to do so?? I had tried more than 20 times. It still fails to get in. In the past, I only saw "Hello World" once in my PSP 3000. But I can't get in now.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:44 am
waiting for new version of HEN!!but i must say DAVEE u r great!!
May 6th, 2009 at 5:46 am
Great job guys! :D
Hope you can make more updates, or maybe a HEN for 5.50, if you would like.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:49 am
Hen never not working on 5.50 because 5.50 delete support tiff.
May 6th, 2009 at 5:49 am
Ah. I see.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:13 am
I will waiting for the version which can run homebrew frmo now till tomorrow or the day after next.
Good lucky,Davee and others.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:29 am

the firmware is not changed, ChickHEN gets loaded into volatile memory.
Once loaded if you reboot your PSP it will load the original firmware therefore you should'nt delete the bin and the images.
