In a surprise announcement, Microsoft Games Studios and Epic Games have announced a "retail only" expansion for Gears of War 2. In addition to adding brand new multiplayer and campaign content, the disc will include all previous game add-ons.
On the disc will be the all new "Dark Corners" add-on which will feature seven new multiplayer maps and a deleted campaign chapter titles "Road to Ruin." The new chapter can apparently be played in the traditional Gears style or it can be played in a stealth mode, whatever that may mean we'll have to wait and see, but if you check out the gallery you'll see Marcus wearing a Theron Guard Outfit.....
Here's the details on the seven new multiplayer maps:
• Allfathers Garden: Honor the sacred grounds of the Coalition founders in this explosive map, where powerful weapons catalyze fast and furious action at this COG landmark.
• Memorial: Set near the Eternal Flame, which pays tribute to the fallen soldiers on the battlefield, a hard-fought battle ensues at the Tomb of Unknowns. Putting their flank formation and evasive skills to the test, players will fight to control the Boomshot.
• Sanctuary: Once a peaceful ground for reflection and remembrance, all that remains of the Sanctuary is the chill of death. Feast your eyes on the arsenal of weapons available as you make your way through the tight paths and blind corners of the Locust-damaged temple corridors.
• War Machine: In the abandoned train station that once served as a hub for travel, players will need to master the Longshot, Mulcher and Boomshot weapons to advance the fight while evading fire from the platforms above.
• Highway: Take the fight deep into the Locust Hollow in the complex passages of this underground highway system brimming with enemy vermin. Stick together, separate the enemy and have an exit strategy ready or it’ll be a one-way trip.
• Way Station: Sitting in limbo between death and “processing” are Locust way stations filled with fallen COG soldiers. Tread lightly and practice patience as it’s better to sacrifice firepower for stealth while navigating this minefield of hidden grenades.
• Nowhere: Set in the middle of what was once a destination for weary desert travelers, the land is now barren and devoid of life. Pick off your enemies with the Longshot sniper rifle and make your way to the stairwell with a well-fortified team during this intense firefight.
The entire retail disc will be packed with over 3600 Microsoft Points worth of content and will include the "Flashback," "Combustible," and "Snowblind" Map Packs. In addition, there will be an introduction by Cliff Bleszinski, a custom Xbox LIVE theme, collectible Gears of War 2 poster, and a strategy guide.
For those who have already purchased the previous map packs, you can still download the "Dark Corners" add-on from the Marketplace for 1600 MS Points. The full retail disc will be available on store shelves worldwide on July 28th for $19.99.

Oh man. That picture of them in Theron suits looks fucking sexy. I want to know what that is all about!

This is pretty cool, loved GoW2. I just hope that by "full retail disc" they mean no downloading is needed...

If I had to guess, you would just get a voucher to download the content off the Marketplace at the store and not a disc. I knew War Machine would be a part of the next map pack. I'm not too sure I like the idea of them swapping out the Torque Bow with a Boomshot though.

The people over at the Epic forums are so salty about this.

Why?

Getting charged 1600 MS points for the seven new maps and campaign content. That's $20. The retail version that includes the old downloadable maps is $20. So basically all of the early adopteds and players who grabbed the map packs as they came out are being raked for $40 while the cheapos who held out get everything for just $20.

They'll all get over it, and buy it... Point be moot.

Yeah they'll get over it. Everything is like that. Always pricey at the start, then it drops down when demand is lowered.
It's simple.
