daggerfall The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Now Free
In a gesture of generosity, Bethesda Softworks has made its 1996 sandbox RPG The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall completely free. Weighing in at a relatively paltry 148 MB, the title can be downloaded from the publisher’s official website.

A technological showpiece of its time, Daggerfall laid the groundwork for open-roam, open-world RPGs, sporting an estimated 161,600 square kilometres of exploration area — a figure that no other Elder Scrolls title can match. To be fair, most of the game’s terrain and surrounding landscape was randomly generated. Just be warned: the gameplay and associated interfaces will feel rather archaic to those who grew up on Morrowind and Oblivion.

As the title was developed with the MS-DOS operating system in mind, it will not run natively on recent Windows versions. Those looking to experience a blast from the past will have to run it under a DOS emulator such as DOSBox.

Awesome. This'll be great to have on my netbook.

People say a lot of negative things about Bethesda, but all considering they are a great company.

Really neat move by Bethesda... I'm guessing my sucky laptop should run this flawlessly :D

People say negative things about Bethesda? When? Where? THey're not perfect but they deliver pretty solid games

The only negative things I've seen said about Bethesda are that their games are buggy as hell... But the games are so damn good, that people play despite the bugs. As a company though, I've never seen anybody say anything negative.

Also, all of the Fallout 1 & 2 fans who were boycotting Fallout 3, but they don't matter anyway.

  4. KezraPlanes

I still haven't decided to play Fallout 1 & 2, because I just can't put down Fallout 3 for the life of me... So many trophies, so little time...

I tried to play Fallout 1, but it's hard to wrap your head around. A lot of need less clicks just to get into and out of a battle.

Also, a lot of rad scorpions. Also, it's pretty hard.

It would have been nice if Bethesda had included Fallout 1 & 2 as unlockables on Fallout 3...

Well, the games are still for sale, so... Yeah, it wouldn't make sense on their part.

In fact, I think I saw a Fallout pack at wal-mart the other day.

  8. KezraPlanes

I might get them since I believe they work on my laptop :P (which sucks xD)

It will, I played it at work, which is an absolutely terrible computer.

    Horse armour.

Aside from that though I think they're pretty sound. The first Elder Scrolls has been free for quite a while. Really decent that they've now made the 2nd one free too.

The modding community is mainly the one that always talks crap. A large majority of them think that the only reason Oblivion or Fallout 3 is worth playing is due to mods, which simply isn't true. It's a really crappy community anyways.

I haven't seen a single Fallout 3 mod worth my time, so that's crap.

Is this even worth downloading and playing or has it not aged well? I've never played it, but love Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I don't know, I only stopped because I kept dying, and I was playing it at work, so I had to stop at a point. I'm actually interested in going back to it.

I don't know, pirate it, see if you like it, and buy it later.

It's free, why would I need to pirate or buy it?

Why would you pirate a free game?

And to answer your question Abe, no it hasn't aged well but if you can tolerate Doom/Wolfenstein graphics then give it a go. From what I've read the gameplay is pretty similar to the other Elder Scroll games.

I don't know, I think I thought I was in a different thread where Fallout 1 was being discussed.

    **EDIT**
Yeah, I was talking with Kezra about Fallout 1, so that's my bad. I kind of forgot what the thread was about.

Not all of them are bad. There's a fantastic quest mod called 'Cube,' though it's in German. Some other great mods are Mart's Monster Mod, XFO, FOOK, Fellout, and Shoulder Pads. But yeah, most mods are utter crap.

Regarding Daggerfall aging well, quite frankly it hasn't graphics wise, or menu wise. Still, the gameplay is fun.

Well, yeah, I just mean the one's I've seen. I don't doubt there are some good ones, but clearly there's so few that they're hard to find amongst the crap.

That's what the top section of F3Nexus is for ;)

Fallout 3 Nexus - Fallout 3 mods and community

You'll have to get past all of the mods for people who want Fallout 3 women to have magically perfect and symmetrical boobs, but otherwise it's a nice list.

You know if you wanna talk Fallout you could make a new thread rather than drag this off topic ;)
