Carmack: Sony Will Enter Next-Gen Market First With PS4

id Software technical director and Doom creator John Carmack believes Sony will be the first to kick off the next wave of consoles with a successor to PS3, tentatively referred to as PS4.

Whether Sony wants to jump the gun to prevent the same sort of 360 lag from happening to them again seems likely.

As developers, we would really like to see this generation stretch as long as possible. We’d like to see it be quite a few more years before the next-gen consoles comes out, but I suspect one will end up shipping something earlier rather than later.

Further to this, Carmack mentioned there is a “decent” chance that one of the next-generation platforms will ship without support for optical media, as Sony has already done with the UMD-less PSPgo. Three years ago, such a scenario would be viewed as unrealistic, but today it’s not exactly far-fetched when taking the rapid growth of digital-based distribution services into account.

The only way I would enjoy a optical drive-less console would be if the games were cheaper. Then again, how would the console be used to watch DVD and Blu-Ray movies?

That's not a big issue. The purpose of a console is first and foremost to play games. The Wii lacks DVD playback (unless you use a homebrew app) and no one ever complained about it, or at least it didn't stop people from buying the Wii.

That's because everyone that wants to watch DVD already has at least one DVD player.

Exactly. And by the time the PS4 is out, it is highly likely most people will have standalone Blu-ray players.

If my PS3 survives I wont, but I'll still have the PS3 for blurays.

The only thing I dislike about a download only console is that a fair few ISPs still have bandwidth limits in place. Mine is only 15GB which might get me two games if I'm lucky and they compress the shit out of them.

tbh, I really doubt the ps4 will be optical media-less. Unless our internet connections/hdd sizes catch up.

I guess that is true. But most of the people that I know that own a Wii, didn't know about the lack of DVD playback until after purchase. They were kinda disappointed, but then remembered that they have a DVD player sitting right below it.

    This.

I never bought a stand alone DVD player.

There's no way it won't have a drive. That alienates just about everyone who doesn't live in Europe or the US, due to slow internet or bandwidth caps.
