Playstation Store Update: 2/11/10
by Adiuvo on Feb.11, 2010 at 7:40 pm, under Gaming, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable
Today's update can be summed up in one word - bundles. On the PS3 side, we got 4; two Burnout Paradise bundles, a Sonic Unleashed bundle, and a Valkyria Chronicles bundle. Regarding the PSP, Sony bundled the rather curious choices of Full Auto 2 and Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars, and also released a Sonic Rivals bundle. All of the bundles are priced pretty decently, ranging from $9.99 to $29.99.
Three PSX classics were also released; Dirt Jockey, Populous: The Beginning, and Sim Theme Park.
On the demo side, three new ones were released; Heavy Rain, echoshift, and Socom: Fire Team Bravo 3. Personally, I can't wait to try out the FTB3 one. Be sure to check out the full content of the update after the break!

Halo Reach Will Not Be Using a Project Natal Control Scheme
by Adiuvo on Jan.31, 2010 at 12:23 pm, under Gaming, Xbox 360
Despite rumors, Bungie confirmed earlier today that Halo Reach, another entry to their popular and groundbreaking Halo franchise, will not be making use of Project Natal's motion capture technology. The rumor first originated back in June of last year when the Bungie president himself, Harold Ryan, said that Reach could be 'enabled' for use with Natal. That obviously didn't pan out, which honestly comes as no surprise for a game such as Reach. Still, despite Microsoft's claims that over 70% of publishers are developing Natal titles, the only major game confirmed for a 2010 release that utilizes Natal is Fable 3, made by Lionhead Studios. Personally, I have to wonder what the majority of Natal games will be like if there's so few major titles utilizing it.
Microsoft's Game Room Not to Allow Games Rated Above E10+
by Adiuvo on Jan.30, 2010 at 12:47 am, under Gaming, Xbox 360
Microsoft's Game Room certainly is shaping up to be quite a contender in the retro market, and this announcement is sure to step things up for their project. As most people are aware, the biggest hurdle for publishers to get their game onto... say a service like Nintendo's Virtual Console is the ERSB ratings. ERSB ratings are notoriously expensive, ranging from $2,000 to $3,000 for a single rating. This turns off publishers who don't expect an amazingly large profit on the games they wanted to release, causing them to often remove the game from their potential library. However, Microsoft has done something to circumvent this particular little hurdle; have the Game Room itself rated. This means that any game that Microsoft allows on the game room will be hit with an E10+ rating, which is what the Game Room was rated at, and it will not have to go through the ERSB rating process.
The only drawback to this plan is that any games already rated over E10+, such as at a T rating, will not be allowed onto the Game Room. It's a small price to pay for access to pretty much all games released before 1990 however. With the rating system bypassed, Microsoft truly can allow publishers to open the floodgates, which is good for all of us.

Playstation Store Update: Sales Galore
by Adiuvo on Jan.21, 2010 at 7:16 pm, under Gaming, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable
Another Thursday, another PSN update. Some suck, some don't, and this one definitely makes up for last week's rather unsatisfying update.
This week Sony unveiled it's '10 for '10 Game Sale,' where it slashed the price by half for 12 games, both on the PS3 and PSP. And no, I don't why it's called '10 for '10' when there's 12 games.
Regarding new games, the classic Championship Bass for the PSX was released, as well as Konami's latest addition to the Vandal Hearts series, Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgement. On the PSP side the offerings were quite nice as well, with the revamped edition of Valhalla Knights 2, Valhalla Knights 2: Battle Stance, being released, offering improved warp points and new content over it's predecessor. The Metal Gear PSP bundle was also added, putting the Metal Gear: Portable Ops series and the Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel in the hands of all PSP owners. And finally, DJ Max Fever, the popular music game, has been uploaded as well.

Playstation Store Update: Not Much
by Adiuvo on Jan.14, 2010 at 8:35 pm, under Gaming, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable
Well it's the famed update Thursday for PSN, but sadly there's not much more content added. PS3 users did get a new demo of Uno and a permanent price drop of $15 on Steamboat Chronicles, but PSP owners got a single game, Luxor: The Wrath of Set. Other notable inclusions are Dynogems, a new PSP mini Puzzle Bobble clone, and a Gran Turismo car pack. Given the two week hiatus Sony had over the holiday, there's not much excuse for the PSP to have such a minimal amount of games - especially when they have the download only PSP Go to support.
On the PS3 side of the update, the quality was a bit better. Rock Band songs, as usual, are aplenty and DLC for Magic Orbz was also present. A White Knight Chronicles combat trailer was also uploaded, along with Socom US Navy Seals: Fireteam Bravo 3 dev diary, definitely pleasing both RPG and FPS fans alike.

Google May Shut Down Services in China
by Adiuvo on Jan.12, 2010 at 8:42 pm, under Computer Software, Consumer Electronics
Google announced earlier today that in mid-December of 2009, it and 34 other large companies were targeted by a "highly sophisticated... attack." While not mentioning the Chinese government in their announcement, Google's response towards the breach definitely hints towards it. As it stands, their solution is simple yet huge; to completely shut down their services in China and close all offices located there. Google's unwillingness to continue censoring search results in China also appears to play a factor, with them citing "...the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech..." as another factor for their possible closure. So far Google stands by it's assertion that they are still 'reviewing' the overall decision regarding China, but given that the company executives in the US ordered the review, the signs don't look good. Some positive things have come out of this however, namely Google furthering it's own security and other companies being highlighted to their own security concerns.
Regarding the third parties involved, United States cyber warefare expert, James Mulvenon, says the attacks came from Taiwanese internet addresses. The attacks also nearly all focused on Silcon Valley companies, perhaps hinting at a distaste with US companies. Furthermore, Mulvenon believes that "This attack highlights the fact that cyberwarfare has basically gone to the next level," as well as that "For Google to pull up stakes and basically pull out China, the attack must have been large in scope and very penetrating." The repercussions of what Google has done will definitely be a source of commentary for many weeks to come, but as for the content of those repercussions, it's anybody's guess.
